Our materials

Warm, sustainable, and durable natural materials—of course.

From the very beginning, the choice of materials has been a cornerstone of our bikes. We have always wanted to create products that are not only strong and durable, but also make sense in terms of who and what they are designed to carry. That is why wood has been the most natural choice. Wood is a renewable, recyclable, and warm material—and for us, it has always felt right that children are transported in something as familiar and sustainable as wood.

Today, we purchase many thousands of square meters of lumber every year, but we source it exclusively from FSC-certified suppliers. This means that we are not merely procuring a raw material—we are also helping to ensure that forest ecosystems are preserved, biodiversity is enhanced, and new trees are planted for future generations.

Although wood is the most visible material on a Christiania bike, the metals used in the construction are just as important. Steel has been an indispensable part of our bikes from the very beginning, as it provides strength to the components that are subjected to the greatest stresses. We use chromoly steel—a material that combines strength with light weight and is significantly stronger than standard steel. To create balance and lightness in the construction, we complement the steel with aluminum. Together, these materials result in a robust, balanced, and reliable bike that can handle everyday life—and then some.

This is how we create bicycles where natural, sustainable, and durable materials go hand in hand with functionality and design.

Front brakes

The type of front brake to be installed on your Christiania bike depends on your needs. We offer either mechanical or hydraulic disc brakes with a 203mm rotor. Both the mechanical and hydraulic disc brakes provide direct and exceptionally powerful braking performance. Alternatively, it is also possible to install mechanical roller brakes as front brakes. The roller brake requires minimal maintenance, does not tend to make noise, and provides a smoother braking experience.

Lights

All cargo bikes with an electric assist motor are equipped with two integrated headlights mounted beneath the cargo box. Each headlight is StvZO, CE, and RoHS certified, has a power output of 1.2 watts, provides 40 lux, and has a visibility range of 150 meters.

Tires

We fit black CST tires with reflectors on all our cargo bikes. The tires are size 24×2.15 (55-507) and can carry up to 145 kg. It has a TPI of 60 and is manufactured with the highest possible puncture-resistant properties, including a double-woven carcass, a thin layer of aramid fiber, and a 3mm puncture-resistant layer. The tire is designed for cargo bikes with puncture resistance level 7 and is ECE-R75 approved.
